Shocking Blue

Shocking Blue fue una banda holandesa de rock, formada en 1967 en La Haya (Holanda). Fundada por Robbie Van Leeuwen, Ferd De Wilde, Klassje Van Der Wal & Cornelious Van Der Beek, después Fred de Wilde sería reemplazado por la cantante Mariska Veres, la cual fue comparada con Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane), por su potente voz.

Se reunieron en 1967 y ese mismo año grabaron su primer sencillo "Love is in the Air", el cual no tuvo éxito. Fue en 1968 cuando grabaron "Lucy Brown is Back in Town" que se dieron a conocer, alcanzando el puesto 21 de popularidad en Holanda. En este mismo año Fred de Wilde es reemplazado por Mariska Veres como vocalista principal.

Fue en 1969 cuando el sencillo "Venus" los elevo a la fama alrededor del mundo alcanzando el #1 de Billboard Hot 100 en Estados Unidos.

En 1970 tuvieron dos hits más: "Mighty Joe" y "Never Marry a Railroad Man" (flip-side "Roll Engine Roll"). En 1971 llegó "Hello Darkness", "Shocking You" and "Blossom Lady". En 1972 "Inkpot", "Out of Sight Out of Mind" y "Eve and the Apple", y en 1973 "Rock In The Sea". Ninguno de estos sencillos tuvieron éxito en Estados Unidos.

En 1974 la vocalista Mariska Veres deja el grupo para iniciar una carrera como solista. Su único éxito fue "Take Me High" en 1975. En los 90, Veres formó un grupo llamado Shocking Blue banner, con el permiso de los integrantes de Shocking Blue.

El 2 de diciembre de 2006, Australian Broadcasting Corporation informó que Mariska Veres había fallecido a los 59 años a causa de cáncer.
